Do you need true rest and relaxation?

I’m in a very busy season so God reminded me of some important things. I expressed them many years ago this way:

I’m writing this from the Nevada shore of Lake Tahoe while looking at California snow-capped mountains across the lake. The sun is beginning to set behind them. All I can think to say is “WOW!” It really is as beautiful here as I had been told.

I feel refreshed. Yes, the fresh, pine‑scented air has helped. The boat ride this morning didn’t hurt. And, I slept in this morning and rested this afternoon. What a treat!

But, last night and today I have been reminded of the truth I often teach others: Spending time with God and in His Word is all the refreshment we need. He refreshes us better than any fresh air, new experiences, or afternoon naps ever could.

Do you know the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand? (You’ll find it in Mark 6:30‑44.) It’s one of many miracles recorded in the Gospels. Before Jesus fed them the bread and fish, we read these words in verses 30 and 31: “The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to Him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, He said to them, “Come with Me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

Has Jesus been saying this to you lately? He sure has to me. As I’ve been in His Word more these last few weeks, and especially yesterday and today, I’ve been reminded that He wants us to spend time with Him.

Are you listening? Is Jesus saying, “Come with Me by yourself to a quiet place and get some rest.”

If you’re like most people I know, you have much you could report. You’ve done this and you’ve done that. There probably are lots of people coming and going, too, and perhaps your needs aren’t being met. Are you listening for God’s voice? Is spending time with Him what you need to be doing? If it is, I hope you’ll do just that.

When you understand that God wants to spend time with you, that this is part of your identity and how He can meet your need for belonging, then maybe you’ll remember to do that. You’re His child and His favorite creation. God wants you to come away with Him. Isn’t that incredible?

Rest in God. Read and meditate upon His Word. Talk to Him. Praise Him for one of His many attributes. And, remember to listen for His voice.
