Hobby Lobby family member: We were prepared to lose everything

If you were faced with the decision to either stand strong for what you believe in and risk losing millions of dollars, along with your family legacy, or to simply comply with the status quo and keep your comfort, what would you choose?

Many of us might stand for our convictions when there’s not much to lose, but it’s hard to know how we will respond in the face of intense risk and adversity until we have experienced it first-hand.

The Green family is all too familiar with this scenario. You may be aware of what Hobby Lobby founder, David Green, and his family faced during the 2014 Supreme Court battle, Burwell v. Hobby Lobby. The Green family refused to back down from their religious beliefs in light of the administration’s controversial birth control mandate.

What you may not realize is how much this family was sacrificing by fighting this mandate. We had the opportunity to hear the full story when we talked with Lauren McAfee, Hobby Lobby’s Corporate Ambassador and granddaughter of David Green, during an exclusive audio interview inside Kirk Cameron’s The Campfire.

Here’s a refresh: Health and Human Service (HHS) Mandate would have required David and Barbara Green and their family business (Hobby Lobby) to provide and facilitate potentially life-terminating drugs and devices in their health insurance plan, against their religious convictions, or pay severe fines.

“We either comply with this law that goes against our deeply-housed religious convictions, or we fight with the courts,” Lauren shares.

If they lost in court and chose not to comply, this would have cost their family $1.2 million dollars per day in fines. In other words, they would have lost their business.

She continues, “For our business, that’s not sustainable in terms of fines. And we really didn’t have a plan B.”

But this didn’t stop the Green family.

“It was something we had to decide as a family. Are we willing to stick it through with our convictions even if we see the business go away because of what we believe?”

While the Supreme Court ultimately made a landmark decision in favor of Hobby Lobby, this was no easy road for the Greens. To hear the full interview, and to hear about Lauren McAfee’s latest book, sign up at The Campfire today.
