Last September, the sports world grieved the tragic, and sudden, death of Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez. Fernandez, one of the league’s top pitchers, died in a boating accident. Now, teammate Adam Conley is sharing the powerful message he gave the locker room after the team found out about Fernandez’s passing.
“This was a moment for me that I had been preparing for without having any idea that this is what I had been preparing for,” Conley tells SportsSpectrum in a new Facebook video. “[T]o speak boldly about the truths and the treasure that I hold and that he calls me to share with those who are lost.”
That’s when Conley stood up.
“I stood up and told those guys I loved them,” he says, explaining how that’s not normal in the big leagues. “I looked all those guys right in the face and said, ‘Jesus is the only way to Heaven.’ It was the most loving thing I could have ever told them.”
“I think it was the Spirit of God.”
And it made an impact. “We had a couple of players pray to receive Christ into their life,” team chaplain Chris Lane confirms.
