The most challenging part of being a parent today

It’s no secret that a child entering a family changes absolutely everything. From your sleeping habits to your increased need for patience, your life will never be the same! And with these unavoidable changes come unavoidable challenges. How we approach those challenges, though, can differ from family to family, and it can truly make all the difference.

So, what is the greatest challenge in parenthood?

That’s the question Kirk Cameron answers this week in his new video series inside the exclusive community called The Campfire.

Kirk and his wife Chelsea were married six years prior to adopting their first child. To say things changed after that is an understatement. They now have six children, each about a year apart. Talk about real parenting experience!

Kirk says that one of the most challenging aspects of parenting for him was actually unexpected. He says he was envious of the time his son, Jack, would spend with his wife.

“I was so used to having ALL of her time, 100 percent! As an infant, of course, he needed her attention every hour of the day!” Kirk openly shares.

Staying connected with your spouse while giving your children the attention they need is a challenge all marriages face. We can so often take our spouse for granted, and while we pour into our children, our marriage is left on the shelf, collecting dust. Any and all relationships require active participation, and the relationship with your husband or your wife is no exception, even during the busy years of parenting.

Now, the way you pursue your spouse may change over time, and that’s okay!

“With all the craziness, it’s not easy for us to get away on a romantic date night once a week. It’s not realistic! I put dates on the calendar and we do that when we can,” Kirk says. “But often, our time together is after the kids go to sleep, or a walk down the street, a hike in the mountains early in the morning or late in the evening.”

Kirk goes on to share two more challenges of parenthood: Social media and knowing how to be a good parent. He shares resources that have helped his family in these areas, as well as how he and Chelsea ensure they are raising their children in a biblical manner.
