Why you need to be careful what you celebrate this Memorial Day

As we approach the long holiday weekend, we are tempted to be thankful only for the day off of work. However, Memorial Day should call our hearts to greater and deeper levels of thankfulness, remembering those who gave their lives for our freedom.

You may find yourself asking, “Don’t we celebrate this twice in America? What about Veteran’s Day?”

To that, Jane Horton would answer, “Absolutely not.”

Jane Horton is a Gold Star wife and veterans’ families advocate, political, military, and casualty policy advisor, as well as a writer and commentator. She is the proud wife of Spc. Christopher Horton, an Army sniper killed in action on Sept. 9, 2011, in Paktia, Afghanistan. During an exclusive audio interview inside Kirk Cameron’s The Campfire, Jane shares her passion to speak for those left behind in war.

She also corrects a common misconception: Memorial Day has a very specific purpose, and it doesn’t involve blanket support for all vets.

On the difference between Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day, Jane says:

“The fallen are no longer here. They don’t have a voice anymore, and they don’t have a face to many people. So we have a day in America to remember those who have given their lives and those that were killed in war.”

She goes on to share that while Veteran’s Day is also very important, every day is Veteran’s Day to her. Memorial Day is a separate, special day to specifically honor those who are no longer with us.

And just in case you thought this was a small issue, consider that Major League Baseball is changing the way it observes Memorial Day this year to more accurately reflect the spirit of the holiday. For example, the league will now donate proceeds from Memorial Day merchandise to two new charities, the Tragedy Assistance Program (TAPS) and Folds of Honor Foundation. In the past, it gave the money to the Welcome Back Veterans initiative.
